IHM Mission Statement
Confirming Christ as the reason for the school, the mission of Immaculate Heart of Mary School is to foster productive citizenship by educating, inspiring and enthusing our students in a Catholic faith- oriented environment.
Professional Development Goal:

- Incorporate lessons learned from summer workshops that helped to develop interactive lessons in Writing and Literature

2012 Summer Reading Grades 7 and 8
Objective : To expand understanding on characterization found in a novel
Outcome: Summer reading activities will be Graded and used for Discussion on characterization.
This summer you are to read TWO books. For each book you are to complete an activity. There are four choices. The activities are due on the first day of school.
Grade 7: Please read the following books: A Year Down Yonder by Richard Peck and Where The Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls.
Due in for September: The Pearl by John Steinbeck and The Giver by Lois Lowry.
Grade 8: Please read the following books: Uprising by Margaret Peterson Haddix and The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton.
Due for September: Chinese Cinderella by Adeline Yen Mah and To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee.
Activity 1: Write a friendly letter to one of the characters. This is to be typed and is to follow correct letter format. The letter is to provide concrete information that reveals the character's traits. Use full heading.
Activity 2: Create three illustrations with captions about the story. Include the name of the book and author. Use full heading.
Activity 3: Fashion a mobile from items related to the story. Include the name and author of the book. No less than 5 items on the mobile. Be neat and creative!
Activity 4:You're the reporter. Design or write a front page news story about a major scene/ event in the story. Be descriptive and set it up to look like a front page of a newspaper. Include a name for the newspaper, a headline followed by an article and an illustration. Include the name of the book and author.
